REU Site: Geothermal and Energy Geotechnics

We are excited to announce the Geothermal and Energy Geotechnics Research Experience for Undergraduates (REU) site at UW-Madison.

The site is sponsored by NSF and hosted by Professors James Tinjum (Engineering Professional Development, Geological Engineering, and Civil & Environmental Engineering) and Dante Fratta (Geological Engineering and Civil & Environmental Engineering).

Program Details

Energy Geotechnics is an emerging discipline in which engineers and scientists employ principles of engineering and the physical sciences of geology, physics, and chemistry for the advancement and design of renewable energy systems, such as wind energy foundations and collector systems, and geothermal heating technology.

Participants would expect to work in a challenging research group while being exposed to laboratory and field experimental work, modeling, analysis and interpretation of scientific data and engineering design of methods and systems.

Duration:
Summer program: 10 weeks, starting May 27th, 2014

Eligibility:
– Be a US citizen or permanent resident
– Either sophomore or junior standing as of Fall 2013
– Majoring in geological engineering, civil engineering, environmental engineering, geology, environmental sciences, physics, or related areas
– Overall GPA of 3.0 or higher
– Preference will be given to students that show strong interest in gaining research experience in preparation for graduate studies
– Members of underrepresented minority groups, students with disabilities, and women are specially encouraged to apply

Compensation:
The stipend for the summer program will provide a $500 weekly stipend and travel support (up to $1000).
